Three Pop Mart Display Cases, $33.90 to $124.30: One Customer's $237.30 Birthday Order, Three Lighting Questions
Share
Lit or unlit is not one question. It's three. Emma messaged me last Wednesday at 9:30pm — three paragraphs, three different Pop Mart figures, three different shelves in her sister's apartment. The Monsters Thanksgiving Day for the bedside table. Molly Fortune Collection for the desk. Hirono Weather You for the living room shelf. She had a different question for each Pop Mart display case. By 10pm I was laying the three empty cases out on the packing bench to answer in person instead of over chat.
Box 1 — The Monsters Thanksgiving Day, 15 × 15 × 20 cm, $33.90 to $90.40
Smallest of the three. Emma's question: do I really need the light? My answer: no. 15cm tall is too short for the ring to do anything useful — the LED sits at the top, the figure is in the middle, the bottom stays dark. You end up with a half-lit figure on a black floor. The bedside table already has a lamp. Skip the ring. Skip the background too, while you're at it — at $33.90, the no-background option is the cheapest dustproof showcase on this site, and the acrylic still holds the same 98% transparency as the bigger boxes.
3mm mirror acrylic panels, raised 2cm brushed black base, free mirror floor sheet, snap-fit assembly. The Thanksgiving UV background is a yard scene: pumpkins, leaves, a wooden table set with turkey. It's the box you'd reach for if you wanted something warm for the corner of a small table and didn't want to spend more than the cost of two takeout coffees.
Emma picked $33.90, no background, no light. For the bedside. For the smallest shelf in the apartment.
Box 2 — Molly Fortune Collection, 20 × 15 × 25 cm, $45.20 to $101.70
Emma's question: what about this one? My answer: yes, light goes on. 20cm is the minimum height where the ring light actually does something. The 25cm-tall figure is Molly in a fur-trimmed winter jacket, holding a gold ingot, against a UV-printed Chinese temple-and-lantern backdrop. 3mm crystal-clear acrylic sides, snap-fit assembly — four corners click into the base, the lid sits flat, no glue. The slide-open door is a small thing but it matters: you can drop the figure in without lifting the top.
With Background is $56.50. Ring light + With Background is $79.10 — the 10mm PVC top and bottom frame adds about 4mm on each side, and the LED ring sits in the top PVC. The figure is small enough that the ring light frames it instead of washing it out. $79.10 it is.
Box 3 — Hirono Weather You Series, 25 × 25 × 40 cm, $67.80 to $124.30 (400%)
Biggest of the three. Emma's third question: PVC top and bottom, or solid wood? My answer: solid wood. The wood is heavier by about 0.8kg per case, so the box doesn't slide on a shelf the way a lighter case would. At 1.5m on the living room shelf, the box sits where you'd see it from the doorway every time you walk in. A sliding box is the kind of thing that drives you quietly nuts.
Solid wood frame, 12mm natural birch, ring light + With Background, $124.30. The UV background is a water-and-bubbles print, blue-green. The free mirror floor sheet sits under the figure; Hirono's feet reflect into it, which makes the 40cm box look like she's standing on water. Multi-case serial lighting is irrelevant here — Emma's only buying one of these — but the LED ring on its own is enough.
The lighting rule we landed on by 10:15pm
If the box sits where you'd see it from the doorway, light and wood. If it sits somewhere you only lean in to look at, skip both. The bedside one and the living room one were easy. The desk was the in-between — and it was the one we ended up giving the ring light to, because the desk lamp is the wrong colour temperature for showing off a UV print. The UV prints pop under 6000K LED. Anything below 4000K and they go muddy. Same for any 3mm mirror acrylic display case: the ring light is a daylight source, not a warm one.
One thing I didn't put in the chat
Last weekend, before Emma's order shipped, I set the empty Fortune and Weather cases on my own kitchen shelf for ten minutes to check the corner fit. At 7am the next morning, the sun came through the side window and hit the UV backgrounds straight on. The Fortune case threw a soft red-gold strip on the laminate, about 30cm long — the lantern and temple colours projecting through the acrylic. The Weather case threw a blue-green strip of the same length, a metre further down the floor. Two small stained-glass windows lying on the laminate. None of the customers will see that on day one. But after a month, when the sun angle changes, they'll notice. The cases don't just sit there. They move light around the room.
About the backgrounds
UV print, baked in-house — we make them ourselves, no middleman markup. Send us a photo at 1MB or better — anything compressed below that prints muddy. Two rules: deep background, light figure. Light background, deep figure. Don't try to print a busy photograph with a busy figure on top of it; the eye will not know where to land. If the figure is mostly white (Hirono Weather You has yellow hair and a translucent dress), pick a deep background; the contrast does the work.
Custom sizes
Standard sizes cover 95% of what people buy. If yours doesn't fit, we don't charge extra. Long, wide, tall, add 3, 3, and 5cm to the longest axis of your figure, so your fingers have room to lift it in and out. Measure with the figure sitting, not standing; a seated figure needs 2 to 4cm more headroom than the box-stated height suggests.
Multi-case serial lighting
We use a single DC jack between cases. Plug the first one in, daisy-chain the second, the third, and so on. One switch. If you have a 12-box wall, you don't need 12 plugs.
The 12mm solid wood version
Heavier by 0.8kg per case. The outer carton is heavier too — the same one we use for our 65cm LEGO cases. Packing tape gets a second strip on the long seam. The reason: wood doesn't have the flex that PVC has, so if a courier drops the box, the wood absorbs the impact instead of springing back. The box arrives flat. The figure doesn't move.
That's where the extra $20 goes.
Emma's order
Went out Friday morning. Thanksgiving at $33.90, no background, no light — for the bedside. Fortune at $79.10, ring light + With Background — for the desk. Weather at $124.30, solid wood, ring light + With Background — for the living room shelf. $237.30 total, $11.30 shipping, no sales tax. Her sister turns 30 on the 19th. We packed it in one outer carton, with the Fortune case between the other two as a buffer.
