Question: where do you put a LEGO motorcycle so it still reads as a motorcycle?

Most display cases on a marketplace are cubes — 20×20×20, 25×25×25, 25×25×35. We sell those too. Cubes are honest boxes for minifigs, buildings, statues. But a bike isn't a cube. A bike is a horizontal line: front wheel, engine, swingarm, rear wheel, all in a row. Push a Technic Ducati into a 25cm cube and the tail either clips the back panel or you rotate it 30° and it stops reading as a bike at all — it starts reading as a sculpture.

The first version of this case was a 25×25×25 cube. We ran it for about two months. It looked like a guitar case with a dirt bike in it. The bike has tall knobby tires and a tall seat; the cube has nothing to do with that geometry. We went back to the cutting table and tried 35 wide by 15 deep by 25 tall — 9 layout iterations before we landed on the proportions you see in the photo above. The 35 is the long axis the bike sits on. The 15 is just enough for the bars and the hand controls. The 25 is the seat height plus a small headroom margin.

Why does a 35×15×25 footprint feel different from a 25cm cube? Three numbers doing three jobs.

First — 35cm of length. A motocross wheelbase, scaled to the LEGO Technic model, runs about 19cm from contact patch to contact patch. Add the kickstand deployed (which is how the set actually sits in the photo) and you want another 8cm of clearance behind the rear tire so the kickstand has room to fall flat on the mirror floor sheet. That gets you to 27cm just for the bike plus kickstand. The remaining 8cm of length goes to front-panel breathing room — 5cm in front of the front wheel, 3cm behind the rear. A cube can't do that math. A long box can.

Second — 15cm of depth. This is the constraint that almost killed the design. A street superbike would not behave in a 15cm deep box — street bikes are narrow and vertical, you read them as a vertical silhouette. But a motocross bike is wide and low. The Desmo450 MX's seat sits high, the bars sit wide, and the whole bike has a "low-slung rectangle" silhouette. The 15cm depth parks the bike naturally. You read it as a bike parked on the ground, not a bike on a shelf. A 25cm-deep cube adds 10cm of dead air on either side of the bars and the bike starts floating.

Third — 25cm of height. The seat of the real Ducati sits at about 87cm off the ground. In LEGO scale that's roughly 11cm from the mirror floor sheet to the seat surface. The handlebar tops, with the rider minifig mounted, are at about 22cm. A 25cm tall box gives you 3cm of headroom above the rider's helmet — close to the ceiling, which is what a designer wants for a low-slung machine. A 35cm tall box would float it; a 20cm tall box would clip the helmet.

The UV-printed back panel does the second job of the box. The Akrapovič wordmark sits in the upper right corner — that's the brand of the exhaust system the LEGO set actually replicates, so it's not decoration, it's a label. Below it, in the middle of the panel, a large "450 MX" sets the model. To the left, a black-and-white "A CENTURY OF DUCATI" mark runs vertically. The eye reads top-down: brand, model, scene. The three tiers of the UV never overlap because they're stacked at three different heights on the back panel.

The red in the panel is the load-bearing color of the scene. With the ring light on, the LED strip runs the full 35cm perimeter — one of the longer strips we offer on a stock box. A longer strip means more diffuse red bleed on the back panel corners, which gives the bike's red plastics a half-shade warmer cast under the LED. That's the thing you can't see in a product photo. The red reads as the same red that came out of the LEGO box, just lit.

If you swap the ring light for the Solid Wood Ring Light variant, the LED strip moves to the underside of the wood lid. The glow comes from the wood edge, not from the visible strip. Quieter. Same LED color, just bounced differently. The wood version is what you order when the box is going on a bookshelf next to books and you don't want a glowing strip competing with the room.

The hardware is the same hardware we put on every box in this size class. The slide door is the long-edge 35cm panel, so the door stroke is a single long push. The mirror floor sheet comes free inside the box — the bike's knobby tires sit on it and the red plastics bounce off it. The base is the 12mm heavy-duty option in either brushed black or solid wood; the wood version adds 240g of weight to the box, which is what you want if the case is going to sit on a high shelf.

Free custom size is the bit most people don't know about. If your bike is wider, deeper, or taller than the stock 35×15×25, we shift to a non-standard size for free. The rule we run is L+3cm, W+3cm, H+5cm — that's the extra air you want on every side so a finger can reach in to lift the bike without scraping the panel. The size change doesn't add to the price. UV custom overlays (your name, your track, your kid's drawing) run as a single extra layer on top of the existing Akrapovič scene — gold or white ink, no setup fee.
