LEGO Display Case for Fortune Firecracker 80118: $101.70 to $146.90, and Why a 60cm Vertical Box Cuts Differently from a 40cm Wide One

LEGO Display Case for Fortune Firecracker 80118: $101.70 to $146.90, and Why a 60cm Vertical Box Cuts Differently from a 40cm Wide One

Last Tuesday I was running the CNC for the new vertical boxes. Six orders pulled from the same drop, five wide and short, one 20cm wide and 60cm tall. The wide ones ran a normal horizontal pass — sheet flat, head cutting across, scrap falling in long strips. The tall one? I rotated the head 90 degrees, the sheet stood on its long edge in the bed, and the offcut came off in one tall column instead of a row of small squares.

That tall column of offcut is what this article is about. It's the difference between cutting for a 20cm-wide 60cm-tall box like the 80118 Fortune Firecracker and cutting for the 40cm-wide 30cm-tall boxes that take up most of the August run. Same factory, same 3mm sheet, same ring-light channel at the top — different scrap profile, different packing, different price tag.

Why 60cm tall is a different cut

Standard cast acrylic sheet: 1220mm by 2440mm. For a 40cm wide box, three 40cm panels fit the width, the 2440mm length gives six boxes per sheet with the 2cm base folded in. For the 80118, the panels are 20cm wide, 60cm tall, plus a 2cm base. Six boxes across the width (120cm) leaves 2cm of trim. One box down the length (60cm) leaves a 180cm tall column of offcut — too narrow, too long for any other standard cut, and the 2cm base needs its own 20cm panel re-entered from the scrap bin.

That tall column is the "yield tax" for vertical boxes. We don't pass it on as a line item, but it's there. The 80118 sits at $101.70 (No Background) and runs up to $146.90 (Solid Wood Ring Light + Background) partly because of it. The 11374 arcade pinball at 40×30×30cm runs $79.10 to $124.30. The price gap isn't profit — it's the sheet.

Two-pass red, and why the gold print holds its line

The 80118 background isn't one print. The lantern base, the central octagon, the red firecracker string, the "马上暴富" gold lettering — that's two UV passes minimum: a flat red field, then a gold plate on top. We run red first, gold second, with pin registration holes to align the two passes under 0.2mm. Most factories run 0.5mm. We run 0.2.

Why this matters: red on a black acrylic back panel reads deeper, more saturated, because the black absorbs the bleed-through. Red on a white back panel reads brighter, almost orange. The 80118 uses the black back panel by default — the "With Background" tier — so the red comes out a deep cinnabar, almost lacquer-like, the gold catching the light at a slight angle. The "No Background" tier ($101.70) skips the UV entirely, raw 3mm clear on a 2cm raised black frame. Same figure, case becomes the lighting.

Why the 60cm box won't tip, and why we ship it flat

Tall narrow case, balance point. The 80118 weighs about 3.1kg loaded, centre of gravity roughly 18cm up from the base, well below the 22cm midpoint. We build the base out of a black-textured 2cm MDF slab wrapped in a 3mm acrylic face — the bottom 5cm of the case is significantly heavier than the top. The 12mm solid wood ring-light option ($146.90) keeps the same low centre, and the wood doesn't flex, so the corners stay square even if the courier isn't gentle.

For shipping, we lay the case flat in a 5-ply corrugated sleeve, foam pads at the four corners, ring-light cable coiled next to the base. The 60cm height means the 80118 doesn't stack well with shorter cases — a pallet of 80118s has 8 per layer, a pallet of 11374s has 12. Same pallet height, different count. That's a freight cost you don't see on the page.

Materials and dimensions, in plain numbers

3mm cast acrylic, 98% light transmission, 2cm raised black base, free mirror floor sheet for the bottom reflection. Snap-fit corners, no glue line. The ring light is a cool-white LED strip mounted to a hidden channel in the top frame, sitting behind a frosted diffuser so the eye sees a soft bar, not a row of dots. Sliding door panel for access.

Box dimensions for the 80118: 35cm long × 20cm wide × 60cm tall. The 60cm vertical is what makes this case — a 50cm tall box would clip the top of the firecracker display, the X-pattern would lose its bottom half. We've made this case to the figure, not the other way around.

Custom sizes, the part most people skip

If 35×20×60cm doesn't fit, send us L×W×H in centimetres, we quote the same day. Rule: add 3cm to L and W for finger space, add 5cm to H — top frame 2cm, base 2cm, plus 1cm of clear air above the model so the lid doesn't touch the bricks. Non-standard sizes carry the same price-per-litre as stock. No "custom" fee. The CNC re-runs the yield, and the quote reflects that — sometimes a custom size is cheaper, sometimes more.

For UV background, send a high-resolution photo — 1MB minimum, ideally 2-5MB. Low-res prints blurry on a 60cm panel. We don't recolour or "fix" photos. If you want the red to match a wall in your home, photograph the wall in daylight with a white card next to it for reference — the only way the printed red comes out close to the actual wall red.

For background rules on a 60cm vertical box: light figures on dark backgrounds (deep red, midnight blue, charcoal), dark figures on light backgrounds (ivory, dove grey, sand). The firecracker X-pattern is a dark figure on a red field, so we used a deep red rather than a brighter orange — the gold lettering reads cleaner against a red that's a step darker than the figure's red. The same logic applies to whatever you're displaying.

Factory-direct, same line, same shop

The 80118 is cut on the same CNC, polished on the same water-jet edge, UV-printed on the same flatbed, and packed by the same team as every other case we make. No reseller, no white-label, no distributor markup. The price is the factory price, the spec is the spec we run in the shop, not a brochure spec. Browse the rest of the LEGO showcase line: Scoparius Mirror Display Cases. The 80118 is one of about 38 LEGO sets we keep templates for, and a custom template is a 3-5 day job once we have your photos and numbers.
