A Designer's Two-Test Method: $56.50 to $135.60 Pop Mart Display Case Color Story for Dimoo Lion Dance, Dream Melody, and Crybaby

Tuesday, 11:08pm. A customer in Helsinki sent me a photo of her living room. A pale Swedish green wall, a dusty linen sofa, a dark walnut side table. She had three Pop Mart figures on the shelf: a Dimoo Lion Dance, a Dimoo Dream Melody, a Crybaby. She wrote: "I want all three in cases, but I don't know which background colour goes with which room. Help me pick."

I almost answered her by email. Then I remembered something I'd been doing in the shop for the last four years, and how much easier it makes the picking. Two tests. Paper and a Pantone card. That's the whole method.

First, the paper test. Pull any sheet of white copy paper out of the printer. Open the case. Lay the paper flat on the bottom panel. Switch the ring light on. If the light is even, the paper goes bright white all the way across. If the paper has a hot spot in the centre, or dark edges at the corners, the LEDs in that case are not lined up to spec, and the figure under it will catch that uneven wash. The paper is faster than your eyes, and faster than the figure. You see the uneven lighting on a 90gsm sheet of paper in two seconds. You see it on a $130 Dimoo figure after about twenty minutes of staring and wondering why the cheek looks dim.

The Dimoo Lion Dance is the boldest of the three. The background is a red temple gate, gold lion head, warm ochre tiles, white confetti, a sense of New Year in a Chengdu alley. 20 by 20 by 30 cm. $56.50 for the no-background version, $67.80 with the background printed on a 3mm cast acrylic back panel, $90.40 with the ring light added, $113 for the solid wood ring light version with 12mm natural birch top and base. The colour temperature inside the case, once the light goes on, is locked at 6000K daylight-white, same as every other case in our line. The reds don't drift orange under our LED. The golds don't drift yellow. Run the paper test on this one and the paper goes bright white. The reds stay red.

This case is for a room with a bit of confidence. A walnut shelf, a dark teak desk, a small bar cabinet, a reading nook with a paper lantern. It does not need a beige sofa. It needs wood, it needs warmth, it needs a wall that isn't trying to be Scandi-neutral. In the Helsinki customer's living room, I told her the Lion Dance goes on the walnut side table. The dark wood and the red gate will talk to each other. The pale green wall will be a quiet third voice in the room. That's the kind of trio that photographs well and reads well in person.

![Dimoo Dream Melody display case with ring light, rainbow pastel city background, on a white table](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0890/7456/9408/files/SKU_10_4e67725a-a4f2-4909-94af-9c84f3c7c899.jpg?v=1785568275)

The Dimoo Dream Melody is the largest of the three, and the loudest in colour. 35 by 35 by 50 cm. $79.10 no background, $90.40 with the rainbow pastel city background, $113.00 with the ring light, $135.60 for the solid wood ring light. The background is a candy-stripe sky: pink, blue, lilac, a yellow sun, a city skyline in pinks and mints. The figure is a pink-haired girl with closed eyes, holding a conductor's score, a small bird on her shoulder. The case is a stage. The lighting under our 6000K LED keeps the pastels honest. A pink wall would compete with the background and turn the whole thing into a pink blur. A grey wall, a white wall, a soft butter yellow wall — those let the rainbow pop without echoing.

For the Dream Melody, the paper test is a quick sanity check on the LED. On this case, the white paper will read the same in the centre as it does at the corners. The 360-degree ring light around the top edge throws even light down, no hotspots, no dark wedges. The figure's face is lit from above, the conductor's score is legible, the bird on the shoulder doesn't drop into shadow.

![Crybaby display case with ring light, soft pink pastel background, on a white table](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0890/7456/9408/files/SKU_10_2428b6df-4834-47cd-ae04-15048c2b1274.jpg?v=1785517406)

The Crybaby is the quietest of the three, and the easiest to place. 20 by 20 by 30 cm. $67.80 no background, $79.10 with the soft pink pastel background, $101.70 with the ring light, $124.30 for the solid wood ring light. The background is one tone of pink. The figure is a single tone of pink, with white rabbit-ears, white tear-drops under the eyes, a red bow at the throat. No rainbow, no city, no confetti. Just pink. The case is small, the colour is small, the energy is small. It goes anywhere. A bedside shelf, a child's desk, a low console in a hallway. It also goes in the same room as the other two. The Crybaby is the eye-rest between the red and the rainbow.

Second, the Pantone test. This is the one most people don't know. Pick up a Pantone card — any card, but Cool Gray 6C is a good neutral. Hold the card against the case, on the outside, at the height of the figure's face. Now slide a second copy of the same card inside the case, behind the figure, against the 3mm acrylic back panel. The two cards are separated by 3mm of cast acrylic. If the inside card looks the same grey as the outside card, your 98 percent transparency claim is true. If the inside card looks washed out, or slightly green, or slightly blue, the acrylic has a colour cast. We pull sheets off the cutting table in 3mm cast acrylic, water-polished on the edges, high-clarity, 98 percent light transmission. The Pantone test is the fastest way to see why that number matters. Two grey cards, one outside, one inside, separated by 3mm of acrylic. They should be the same grey. On our sheets, they are.

For customers who want a custom background, the colour test is the part of the order I push hardest. Send me a photo of the wall, not the figure. The figure goes inside the case. The wall goes outside. The background colour has to land somewhere between the two. If the wall is cool grey, warm the background up. If the wall is warm beige, cool the background down. Don't send the same background colour as the wall, or the case looks like a hole cut into the drywall. Send a colour two steps away on the wheel. The acrylic's 3mm thickness gives the printed colour a little lift, like a varnished painting. The HD UV print runs at 1500 DPI, so a high-resolution photo (1MB to 5MB is the sweet spot) lands crisp on the back panel. A low-resolution photo prints muddy, and no amount of 98 percent transparency will fix that.

If you need a non-standard size, send the length, width, and height, then add 3cm to length, 3cm to width, 5cm to height. That gives you 1.5cm of finger space on three sides and 5cm of vertical clearance for the lid lift. The free custom size option does not add to the price. The cut panels go on a packing trolley, get wrapped in 5-ply corrugated cardboard, then the gaps are filled with foam so nothing shifts in transit. A 20cm case ships at 1.2 kg, a 50cm case at 2.4 kg. The figure doesn't move, the acrylic doesn't flex, the corners don't chip. The bench and the packing station sit six metres apart. The same line, the same shop, no middleman markup, no reseller chain on top.

I sent the Helsinki customer back a one-paragraph reply: Lion Dance on the walnut side table, Dream Melody on the pale green wall (on a white shelf, not wood), Crybaby on the linen sofa console. Three rooms, three cases, three backgrounds, all in stock. She wrote back eight minutes later. "Done. Order placed." Total: $328.20, including the two solid wood upgrades. She didn't ask about the case material. She didn't ask about the LED chip. She asked about the wall, and the room answered for her.

If you've got three Pop Mart figures in three different rooms, send the rooms first, not the figures. The cases will follow.
