A Designer's Read on the LEGO 21372 La Catrina Display Case: $90.40 to $135.60, and the Case for a Quiet Background Behind a Loud Figure

A Designer's Read on the LEGO 21372 La Catrina Display Case: $90.40 to $135.60, and the Case for a Quiet Background Behind a Loud Figure

Last Sunday evening, around 7pm, an email landed. The sender's name was Marisol, second-generation Mexican-American, runs a small Etsy shop making sugar skulls in the off-season. She'd spotted the new LEGO 21372 La Catrina the day it went up, and ordered the mirror acrylic display case within an hour. Her question wasn't about shipping, or fit, or assembly. Her question was this: "My ofrenda already has marigolds, papel picado, candles, and a photo of my grandmother. Does the case need its own background, or will it fight everything else on the altar?"

That question — does the case need a background, or will it fight — is the kind only a designer friend would ask out loud. So I asked one.

My designer friend's first reaction, on a video call an hour later, was: "Send me the product photo with the UV on, and the one with it off." I sent both. She went quiet for about 40 seconds. Then: "The figure is already carrying five colours. Black dress, orange hat, green shoulder pads, marigold flowers at the base, and that little orange-and-black spider trailing behind. Adding a busy UV on top of that is asking the eye to do two jobs at once."

That is the entire case for a quiet background, made in one sentence. The 3mm high-clarity acrylic, the 98% transparency, the 35 by 25 by 50cm interior — none of those numbers change whether the UV is on or off. What changes is what your eye is asked to land on first. With a UV night-sky behind La Catrina, the eye lands on the whole scene. With a plain grey wall behind the case, the eye lands on La Catrina alone, and the long black dress becomes the picture's centre of gravity.

The 50cm interior is just enough headroom for the orange hat to sit up cleanly above the skull, and the long black dress fills the rest of the vertical space. Take the UV away and that doesn't change — the dress is the weight. The 2cm raised black base lifts the figure 2cm off the shelf so it doesn't sit flat against the marble, and the free mirror floor sheet under the figure doubles the visual depth of the dress's lower half. A La Catrina on a marble surface, on a plain grey wall, behind a clear case, with a 2cm air gap below and a mirror under the base — that is a quieter, more dignified read than a UV scene. The orange hat still pops. The green shoulders still register. The flowers at the base still catch the eye. They just don't have to share the stage with a moon and a castle.

Marisol's second question was about the ring light. Specifically: "If I get the lit version, is the light cold or warm? Because the candles on the ofrenda are warm, and I don't want the figure to look like a different colour from everything else on the altar."

The ring light system on every Scoparius mirror acrylic display case is a warm-white LED strip, not a daylight one. The 3000K tone pulls the orange flowers and the marigold pumpkins at the base toward gold. The black dress reads as deep charcoal instead of blue-black. The green shoulders pick up a faint amber wash, because warm light does that to green. The skull — the white plastic of the face — reads as warm ivory, not the clinical white you'd get under a cooler bulb. That warmth is the point. La Catrina is a Día de los Muertos figure, not a Halloween-store prop. The colour temperature should feel like a candle is in the room, not a fluorescent tube.

The $113.00 ring light tier adds the LED ring, the driver, and a single switch on the side panel. The $135.60 solid wood ring light tier adds a 12mm solid wood top and bottom panel in place of the standard 10mm PVC foam board — same acrylic panels, same UV background option, just a heavier, more bookcase-friendly frame. If the case is going to sit on a wood shelf next to other wood things, the 12mm solid wood version disappears into the room. The PVC version stands out as an object. Both are valid. It depends on whether you want the case to read as furniture or as a display.

All four tiers use the same 3mm cast acrylic with 98% transparency, the same Snap-Fit connector system (no glue, assembles in about 8 minutes, reusable if you ever swap sets), the same slide-open door, the same multi-case serial lighting harness — daisy-chain two or three Scoparius cases together and they all run off a single switch. The mirror floor sheet is free on every tier. Free Custom Size is free on every tier: send us the LEGO set number, the three dimensions, and we quote it without charging extra for the non-standard size.

For Marisol's ofrenda, my designer friend ended on this: if the altar is for an adult, no UV — the figure does the work, the case holds the figure, the ofrenda around it does the colour. If the altar is for a child, the UV night-sky is a kindness — it makes the skull feel less bare, gives the green shoulders and orange hat a scene to belong to. Same $101.70 case, same $90.40 if she drops the UV. Same factory, same 3mm sheet, same Snap-Fit. The only thing that changes is the audience. The case is the same either way.

If you're shopping for a LEGO set with a figure that already carries a lot of colour, send us a photo of the room it's going in. We can mock up which UV background sits best against your wall, or send a no-background tier for the floor model and a UV tier for the wall model so you can see both under your own lights.
