A $45.20 LEGO Display Case vs a $101.70 One: Same Acrylic, Different Bones

Twelve years on the cutting table and I still laugh at some listing photos. A case shows up online for three times our price, photographed like it’s made of diamonds. Then it lands on a bench and the “wood” base turns out to be a printed sticker on MDF. I run the factory — Scoparius. So when I tear down our own cases, I tear them down for real. Today: three LEGO cases from our own line, prices from $45.20 to $101.70, and what the extra money actually buys you.
Start with the little one, LEGO 43023 — 30 × 15 × 25 cm. The short, squat one that sits on a shelf without shouting. No-background version, $45.20. Four walls of 3mm high-clarity acrylic, 98% transparency. Hold it up to a window and you’ll see what that means: no green tint, no wavy distortion. The base is a raised 2cm brushed-black frame, real thickness, not a folded lip. Run your thumb along the rim. Water-polished, no burrs. Cheap cases keep those little stress marks where the sheet was cut; one pass of your finger and you feel it, like dragging across sandpaper.
Then LEGO 21066 — 30 × 15 × 35 cm, the tall narrow one, and honestly the one I think photographs best. Same sheet stock, same $45.20 entry price. Where it splits is the top tier. The ring-light option swaps in 10mm PVC boards top and bottom, and here’s the neat part: several cases plug together and one switch lights the whole wall at once. Night falls, that shelf glows, and people stop mid-sentence to look at it. There’s also the solid-wood version — 12mm natural wood panels, warm to the touch, feels like furniture, because it basically is. That one tops out at $101.70. The acrylic walls are identical; the money went into the frame. (The store page for this one has 23 photos — we photograph every option, even the boring ones.)
Big one last — LEGO 42077, 50 × 25 × 22 cm, the long low rally-car box. This one runs only two options, no ring light. With background, $84.75; without, $73.45. Why? It’s a wide case, the background sheet carries the whole look, so we print it to order — you send the image, we cut. Same 3mm acrylic, same 2cm base. Some resellers charge extra for that print step. We fold it into the price and tell you upfront.
Assembly, for the record: no glue, no tools, no clips that snap off the first time you touch them. Snap-Fit connectors, tolerance held under 0.5mm. Slide the door open, drop the build in, press the top. Ten minutes, and it stays dust-proof for years. Every case gets checked before it ships — I’ve opened reseller stock with fingerprints baked into the acrylic. That doesn’t leave this bench.
Custom work is where being the factory pays off for you. UV printing: pick a backdrop that contrasts with your set — dark background, light bricks; light background, dark build. Send the highest-resolution file you have; anything under a certain size prints soft, and there’s no un-softening it after it’s cut. No art of your own? Every case on the store ships with a ready themed background, one click at checkout.
Odd sizes? Measure the set — length, width, height — then add 3cm, 3cm and 5cm. That gap is your fingers when you place it. Resizing costs nothing; send the numbers, get a draft to approve before the sheet touches the machine. Want the 43023 case taller for a tower build? Same drill, one line on the cutting list.
That’s the tour. 557 LEGO cases live on the store now, from the $45.20 starters to the ring-light monsters. Real photos, real dimensions on every page. We’re the source factory — no middleman between the cutting table and your shelf. Go look. One of them fits your build.
